Jean Renoir’s powerful and eloquent anti-war film set during World War One. It’s among the most understated films ever made, effortlessly humanistic but far too subtle to indulge in preaching. It’s funny, exalting and glorious. In 1952 both Orson Welles and David Lean cited the movie as one of their top ten, so costume designer Jenny Beavan is in good company. This is one of her favourites and she will be at the screening to talk about why.
